A Chameleon Sky
The sands of time are running out for the central star of this the Hourglass Nebula. With its nuclear fuel exhausted, this brief, spectacular, closing phase of a sun-like star's life occurs as its outer layers are ejected and its core becomes a cooling, fading white dwarf. In 1995, astronomers used the Hubble Space Telescope to make a series of images of planetary nebulae, including the one above. Here, delicate rings of colorful glowing gas (nitrogen-red, hydrogen-green, and oxygen-blue) outline the tenuous walls of the 'hourglass.' The unprecedented sharpness of Hubble's images revealed surprising details of the nebula ejection process and may resolve the outstanding mystery of the variety of complex shapes and symmetries of planetary nebulae. Where do we go? That’s obivious, the moon is the most logical first step to space exploration. Now that NASA has found ice on the moon the possiblities are endless. Will it be a tough task? Yes. Will it be costly, of course. But should there be a price on the survival of our species? Instead of adding more nonsense to t he space station, they should be launching cargo carriers to the moon carrying supplies needed to start building a colony. We have the means to do this. Once the required equipment has been sent to the moon, then a manned mission should be planned. Nasa could have everything there waiting the first colonist. Solar panels, housing units, drills, etc. But to sustain any length of time one would have to consider the damage that could be done on the surface. So the first colonist would have to start construction of a sustainable below surface living environment. Some think this would be to costly, and would take to long. But we have the technology and the equipment to resolve this issue. As I said before, the moon is the most logical location to begin, its closer than Mars, we have been there before, we know the compostion, Nasa has already chosen locations. So why wait, if they need volunteers, well I’m sure all they have to do is ask.
A nice thing they could add to the space station would be a space shipyard. So that the colony ships might be put together in space, allowing us to use the ISS as a relay station between dedicated launchers and dedicated spaceships.
The moon would be a nice place for a prototype colony and future space port. However, the grand prize of the Solar System would probably be the terraformation of Mars. Using the asteroid belt as a source of raw materials, a terraformed Mars could become an industrial power.
