Is it possible that with enough research and experimentation, everything can be recyclable? In this way an artificial and self sustaining environment could perhaps be maintained.
Even if we manage to develop full recycling technology, this would only mitigate, not solve our resources problems. Human civilization and economic growth has always been tied to the consumption of ever increase amounts of resources. The alternative is stagnation.
This kind of technology would certainly be vital to the development of space colonies and the preservation of Earth, but we will still need more outside resources to fuel our growth.
In the long run, colonization will be our best shot at preserving Earth without crippling our economical growth, by moving part of our infrastructure out of the planet and gaining us new resources to explore, which would relieve the pressure on the homeword’s biosphere.
